A gala event of the REAL New Zealand Festival, and a first for New Zealand, the project has created the opportunity for more than 160 young Aucklanders to work with renowned English choreographer and artistic director Royston Maldoom, sought after for his large-scale works with young people. Maldoom has realised this project with renowned orchestras including the Berliner Philharmoniker and Sir Simon Rattle.

SACRE: The Auckland Dance Project is a major staged production performed live to Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Music Director Eckehard Stier. It features artistic support from leading New Zealand choreographers Ann Dewey, Moss Patterson and Taiaroa Royal, and costumes by Marama Lloyd of MOA. Their participation gives the resulting dance work a uniquely South Pacific flavour, and will leave a legacy of large-scale dance work in Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Participating schools are Kristin Senior School, Tangaroa College, Mt Albert Grammar School, Pakuranga Intermediate, Hay Park School and New Lynn School. Students from the University of Auckland Dance Studies programme will also be involved.

"Dance has enormous potential as an agent for personal transformation and community development." - Royston Maldoom

Royston Maldoom's passion is to give young people the opportunity to transform themselves through contemporary dance. He works with people who may have had no experience of dance and introduces them to a new world of intense work, respect and self-esteem. Following his interest in Maori and Pasifika cultures, SACRE: The Auckland Dance Project is one of very few projects Maldoom is committed to in 2011.

Presented with support from ASB Community Trust, the British Council and New Zealand Lotteries Grants Board.
