The ViewWellington Review
Vibe
Viva Mexico indeed! The Left Bank Cuba Street location does it’s best to hide this unabashed celebration of Mexican culture and cuisine. Everything is authentic, bar the sunshine...we are in Wellington don’t you know.
Service
With a young version of Danny Trejo offering recommendations, who would argue! Don’t go expecting a scene out of a Tarantino flick however, these guys run a friendly operation and they are more than willing to help a gringo out. Super efficient, yet punters are encouraged to kick back and stay a while over a few cervecas.
Drinks List
The Mexican heavyweights are there in the form of Corona and Sol, however the very good Dos Equis is also on hand as is a very interesting, distinctly Mexican drop, Cave Creek Chilli Beer. For $8-$9 for imported options, it’s hard to go wrong.
Highlights
The Fish Tacos Exoticas served with green tomato sauce is one very flavoursome dish although not quite as hot as I was expecting. The menu isn’t extensive but Viva Mexico sticks to its roots very well and as such is without doubt the best Mexican restaurant in Wellington.
Most Surprising Dish
There was a fair bit of food envy on this particular visit amongst our foursome, with the Sincronizadas Quesidilla (Ham and Jalapenos tortilla) receiving a lot of apparently warranted attention.
The Bottom Line
Viva Mexico is one of Wellington’s very best cheap and cheerful spots. The perfect restaurant for a leisurely catch-up with friends, and with affordable, tasty options on the menu, you may be surprised as to just how many friends you have in the capital!
A Reason To Return
The Desayunos menu (available from 11am) sounded interesting - I think there’s a Huevos Rancheros with my name on it.
