If you’re at the Courtenay Place end of town and seeking somewhere straight up, The Cambridge is your best bet. A carefully renovated historic hotel (1883), this is about as ‘classic Kiwi boozer’ as Wellington gets. Beer by the quart as well as the jug, acceptable food, TAB and pokies, quiz nights, big screens and a smokers’ alley. It may sound pretty down-home, but this is a comfortable, relatively stylish and well-run pub, fit for all ages and all persuasions.
