The ViewWellington Review
Vibe
Istana Malaysia occupies such a large space on Allen Street that unfortunately works against it on quiet mid-week nights. No amount of activity would make the cavernous setting feel any more inviting on such a night.
Service
The service was a sharp contradiction to the ambiance – informative, friendly staff who were genuinely interested and willing to engage. The level of hospitality we experienced on this visit was terrific.
Drinks List
Wine list fairly limited, yet a good array of local and international beers on offer. Singha complimented the cuisine perfectly.
Highlights
I’d been warned that the Beef Rendang was super hot, but well worth every mouthful – a recommendation that proved spot on. The Chicken Murtabak also raised more than a few approving eyebrows amongst our dining party.
Most Suprising Dish
Udang Sambal, prawns cooked in a thick chilli and tomato sauce, wasn’t a dish I’d noticed at any of Wellington’s other Malaysian eateries, but Istana Malaysia certainly does this dish well.
The Bottom Line
If there’s one cuisine Wellington does well it’s Malaysian – and in any other New Zealand city Istana Malaysia would certainly be considered up there. In the nations’ capital however, competition is fierce and Istana Malaysia finds itself chasing the top contenders.
A Reason To Return
Round up a large group and make a night of it. Istana Malaysia is affordable, service is very good and food certainly tasty – you just may have to bring your own atmosphere.
