The ViewWellington Review
Vibe
One of Wellington's true historical landmarks, the Boulcott Street Bistro has long been considered a 'special occasion' restaurant. With a warmth and certain familiarity of its own, it's not hard to see why Wellingtonians have flocked to Rex Morgan's eatery since it opened it's doors in the nineties.
Service
Chatty and informal, the wait staff were ever-present without being imposing. Their knowledge of the extensive wine offering was also so good that we were happy to take their advice on more than one occasion, with a very pleasing outcome.
Winelist
An impressive selection with a fair portion available by the glass and between $14-$17, very reasonable. The Palliser Estate Chardonnay was an inspired suggestion.
Highlights
The Roasted Poisson du Jour (on our visit, Snapper), was exceptional. The roasted fillet was served with a salsa verde and corn chowder, and the flavour combinations brilliant. My dining companions' Fillet Bearnaise with red wine jus was also very moorish.
Most Suprising Dish
The Macadamia and Chocolate semifreddo with caramalised honey pears was the perfect dish to cap off an exceptional meal. My own selection of the profiteroles with BAileys ice-cream wasn't nearly as tasty, but good all the same.
The Bottom Line
You shouldn't limit your visits to the Boulcott Street Bistro to special occasions, for although it is considered by most critics to be amongst the top tier of Wellington restaurants, the price, service and food should be an experience savoured more regularly.
A Reason To Return
The Boulcott Street Bistro is one Wellington restaurant that gets every detail right - in my opinion a fairly strong reason to return.
