Southern Cross Garden Bar & Restaurant Information

Two ideas quicken the pulse of every Kiwi: The Great Outdoors. And The Great Indoors. At the award winning Southern Cross, we reckon they've got it bang on. Now that Winter is upon us, there's the fireplace lit and the garden bar stocked against the chill with hot water bottles, blankets, homemade mulled wine - plenty of cozy spots to rest up and the Stonegrill dining is cranking…

Southern Cross is a pretty unique multi functional space. Has a bar, pool tables, pub food, a finer dining area, a fantastic outside sitting area where they regularly host outdoor film nights and lots of other events. There’s also a separate function room for private functions. The place is always buzzing and both food and service are pretty good considering how big and busy the place is. A Wellington staple for a long time and well worth the hype.

'The Cross' feels quite uniquely Wellington with it's garden bar. Blankets and hot water bottles are required most of the year, but the lighting and atmosphere make it an awesome place to hang out.

As well as a bar the venue contains a restaurant and private spaces for events. The restaurant offers two-for-one Stonegrills on Mondays and Tuesdays (but get in early as they run out fast) and regularly have live music.

There are different snacks and taps to the standard as well as the classics (like chips), a range of different tap beers and decent house wines. Somewhere to take out-of-towners to.

Hands down my favourite bar to go to in Wellington, especially on a Sunday afternoon to chill with mates. They also have GREAT regular events during the week - kroon for your kai, stitch & bitch knitting circle, giant jenga competition etc. Southern Cross is kid friendly, and a great place to host book clubs, Mummy groups, etc. Oh and the food and drink are pretty top notch as well - try the stonegrill.

Bars can often be hectic places, with the fight to get to the bar an age old familiarity for many of us. Nestled then just out of the CBD is a haven of calm in the form of the Southern Cross. One of the most spacious restaurant bars in the city, The Cross gives you the choice of plush leather seating indoors, or ample seating outdoors, surrounded by a cool atmosphere and even cooler decor.

The courtyard area is also one of the most family-friendly bar areas in Wellington, and indeed is actively promoted as such. You'd be hard pressed to go there on a day and not see children grabbing some of the games on offer, not least the Giant Jenga which is almost as much fun for onlookers as it is for participants.

Not content with being a great hangout, The Cross is a fine venue for dining in. It boasts a broad menu, but the Devils On Horseback and The Cross Platter in particular come highly recommended. If you're looking for somewhere away from the busyness of the city but still close enough to the action then you'd be hard-pressed not to enjoy a Cross experience at least once.

Really like the garden bar. Food is tasty, especially the stonegrill but seems quite pricey.
