Located over the road from the Beehive this is Parliament’s pub. Housed in a lovely old hotel, The Backbencher is a civilised establishment, with satisfying food and slick service. There’s a respectable all-day bar menu, and brasserie menu from 5.30pm. For those just wanting to imbibe, the beer selection is decent and the wine-list is long and NZ-predominant. The Backbencher’s interior is bright and interesting: the walls decorated with political paraphernalia, and most famously the rather creepy satirical mannequins.
