Four out of Five stars
Running time: 92 mins

An exhilarating and immersive Metallica concert film twinned with a dark, trippy narrative following a roadie named Trip who pops a pill and goes on a mission to find a mysterious package.

What’s it all about?
Metallica take to the stage to play their greatest hits in this live concert film which also threads together a narrative starring Dane DeHaan as a roadie on a surreal trip.

The Good
There have been a few concert films out of late and Through the Never is certainly the most creative and impressive of the lot. Instead of letting a concert play out from start to finish, Metallica have decided to include a fantasy horror narrative starring the rather brilliant Dane DeHaan, which is intertwined with atmospheric live footage. The narrative is reminiscent of Phillip Ridley’s horror film Heartless in terms of its dark visuals and levels of anarchic violence. Swiftly descending into chaotic madness with a gas-masked horseman hanging people and charging towards Trip (DeHaan) with furious vengeance, it fits in perfectly with Metallica’s powerful chords and lyrics about injustice (as does the crumbling on-stage Lady Liberty).

The Great
Antal manages to make the arena setting an intimate and raw experience with his superb directing skills. The cameras swooping in and out of the crowd, whose passion and chanting is infectious, alongside the pyrotechnics of the live show is quite something to behold. The imagery of electrical surges and bullets raining down on to the stage brings not only a grand sense of occasion to the proceedings but a rush of nostalgia for the head banging heights of the 1980s.

The mad skills of guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo are commanding and mesmerising; Lars Ulrich sweats along proudly banging his drums as the centrepiece of this quintessential quartet of thrash metal, as James Hetfield booms out their definitive tunes such as Enter the Sandman, and it’s every bit as outrageous and magnificent as it’s always been.

Worth seeing?
Metallica Through the Never is essential viewing for all fans and should even keep the attention of the casual listener thanks to its striking visuals, thunderous sound and superb direction.
