Written by a woman about women. The vampire theme here mainly serves the purpose of enabling the story to unfold across 200 years which is pivotal to the plot.
'Byzantium' is very well crafted, has a fantastic screenplay and wonderful acting from all of the cast. I will refrain from going into individual performances as that would take quite a while but really everyone in it was flawless.
Anyone who's expecting the recklessness and grandeur of 'Interview with the Vampire' (which I did love) is likely to be bitterly disappointed. This is a very beautiful, moving and deeply sad film that will probably go completely unnoticed due to the focus not being on sex and blood which tend to sell much better.
