Emily Browning and Jena Malone Interview
Emily Browning and Jena Malone Interview
Despite only being in their twenties both Emily Browning and Jena Malone have a list of film and television credits as long as their arms. With roles as Violet in Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events and Lydia Bennet in Pride and Prejudice, respectively, the girls are certain to become more and more familiar with cinema audiences as Sleeping Beauty and Jack and Diane due for release in late 2011. Currently starring in Zack Snyder’s comic book inspired fantasy Sucker Punch as Babydoll and Rocket, they spoke to View’s Matthew Turner about their intense training schedule, the difficulties of pole dancing and forming their own sisterhood.

This is a movie where if you ask ten people what the film is about you'd get eleven opinions. From your point of view, how did you understand the film? What are the girls going through?

Emily Browning

Well, first of all, I think that's an awesome thing. I mean, the idea that this movie can make people think different things, that's so exciting to me. I love the idea that there'll be people that love it and people that don't like it. I would so much prefer that than everybody feeling kind of ambivalent about it, you know? I think that's so much more interesting. Yeah, exactly. The fact that people can think about it a lot more is very cool. For me, I was finding different elements every single day. It was kind of the same for us. But it's essentially about escapism and where your mind goes to when you're pushed into these dark realities and the fantasies that you can escape into and finding empowerment through that. That's sort of the basis of it.

Jena Malone

It was all in the script. When I first read it, the script was a little bit more R-rated, just in the sense of the plot and the detail and the structure and some of it had been taken out for the PG-13. But I understood what it was, you know? I knew that it was operating on multiple levels of reality and that it was about this girl's imagination and escaping oppression and basically the willingness to sacrifice anything for their freedom. It's also, if you want to put it simply, a prison-break film. I mean how many of them exist? They're all over the place. But it's new, it's a different style of that genre because obviously it's Zack Snyder and he doesn't do anything that's ever been seen before, so that's what we've come to expect from him. And that's the thrill of it.
It's essentially about where your mind goes to when you're pushed into these dark realities and the fantasies that you can escape into...
That's presumably the big attraction to working with him?

Jena Malone

Absolutely, I mean I was a big fan of his work before I even heard about the project. But then there was not one element that wasn't sort of tantalising as a young actor. I've never been asked to do so much on a film. I've never had someone believe in me so greatly, push me so far and be rewarded so richly. Not only physically and working with guns and doing dances, but also emotionally and building up an emotional through-line with these five young women and getting them to be bonded together, doing incredible stunt work and working with wires. I mean, I've been working for 16 years and no-one's ever been like, 'You know, you look like you could slay 40 men and a dragon.' That was an incredible thing.
So it was even greater an experience than you expected?

Jena Malone

Absolutely. It was life altering for me. I learned a lot, particularly about my own inner strength. When you're taught about the physical body, that's something that you'll take with you for the rest of your life, and on top of that, getting to have such incredible friends, a support team with these women, that I will have for the rest of my life.
Do you think you'll do more action films, both of you, on the back of this?

Emily Browning

If Zack asked me to, I'd do it in a second.

Jena Malone

Yeah, he knows how to make them. Not everyone gives you three months of training before you start working on a film and he really is very dedicated and detailed, takes care and wants everything to be so perfect. And he makes you feel so safe, he makes you feel so confident that you can do these otherworldly things. Actually, we wanted to put a statement out, that we're actually only making action films from now on.

Emily Browning

But only together. All of us together.

Jena Malone

Yeah. It's going to be a little limiting but you know, we'll see what happens.

Emily Browning

Especially because I don't think Warner Brothers is willing to back it, so we'll be funding it ourselves.

Jena Malone

Yeah.

Emily Browning

We'll be filming it on my Blackberry ...

Jena Malone

It'll have to be sock puppets. It's fine. I mean, I'm learning how to act with my hand more, you know, doing stunt work.

Emily Browning

Seriously I like to think that I try really hard to make good, interesting decisions with films but if someone gave me the worst script ever and said, 'Oh, but it'll be with the entire cast of Sucker Punch and Zack Snyder, I'd be like, 'Okay. I'll do it!' [Laughs] Because I feel like I could work with these guys forever, making action films forever.
